A tick is a small arachnid, about the size of a sesame seed, about the width of a human hair.

They are flat and have six legs, a body, and a hard outer shell.

The legs are slender and have claws that are usually longer than the body (called raptorial), but the legs are not as long as a mosquito.

The back legs are not as long as the front legs and the back legs have claws that are longer than the front legs.

A tick bite can cause anaphylaxis.

A tick can also carry diseases such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme disease.

Where can I find ticks?

Ticks are found in all habitats, and they are active hunters at all times of the year.

Ticks prefer humid and moist areas.

Ticks can be found on the following outdoor places:

Tick infested areas, such as wooded areas, close to water, thick grass, or tall weeds

Under leaves and other leaf litter

In the soil under sidewalks, roads, railroad tracks, or damp ground with a lot of water

In the woods, brush and grass at the edge of forests and fields

In parks, side of buildings, tall grass, or dense brush in urban areas

In barns, sheds, and other places where animals are kept

In animal houses (e.g. barns, sheds)

In the home

In compost piles and manure piles

In compost bins

In wooded areas close to woodlands or wooded areas

In wooded areas near buildings

Ticks can be found in the grass, weeds, and shrubs close to water.

What are the signs of a tick bite?

Signs of a tick bite usually begin with the tick being found. If the tick is seen, people should inspect the area for the tick and remove it.

A tick may be in an awkward position and may be difficult to pull out. Pulling the tick out may cause the tick to release its mouth parts, which can be painful.

The person may have a mild allergic reaction to the tick bite. The allergic reaction may include a skin rash or redness.

People may have symptoms of tick fever after a tick bite. The symptoms include a mild fever, chills, headache, joint pain, muscle pain, and a red rash on the skin.
