What can I do if my cat has been neutered and he still cries?

Cats can be very difficult to settle down after a neutering operation, especially if the surgery has been performed in a young cat. If your cat is still crying in the evening or at night, it may be that the anaesthetic has worn off. Consider taking your cat to the vet for a check-up.

What are the risks in neutering my cat?

The risks of neutering include:

a rise in numbers of cats being found homeless

a rise in the number of cats being found dumped in pounds and rescue centres

a rise in the number of cats being abandoned, in particular female kittens

smelly urine and faeces

a tendency to mark territory

a lack of interest in sex

lack of interest in playing with toys

a reluctance to use the litter tray

an increased incidence of urinary tract infections

Which cats can be neutered?

Your vet will be able to tell you if your cat is a suitable candidate for neutering. Males can be neutered at any time, but females should be neutered before they reach sexual maturity (between four and six months).

What happens when my cat is neutered?

When your cat is neutered, the male testicles are removed from the scrotum and the spermatic cord is severed. In females, the ovaries and the uterus are removed. After the operation, your cat will be given an injection to ensure that the anaesthetic wears off quickly. He will be allowed to recover in a quiet and peaceful environment for two or three days. Your vet will advise you about when you can return your cat to his normal routine.

How much does it cost to neuter a cat?
