What happens when cats fight

All told, there have been a total of nine recorded cat fights in the United States and Canada.

In the most recent incident, a couple in Phoenix, Ariz., was arrested after trying to cover up their cat fight with a tarp.

The couple was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty for chasing their cats about the kitchen with a broom.

According to the Arizona Humane Society, there have only been four documented cat fights in the United States since 1990.

In the United States, the two most likely places to see cat fights are at shelters and in the workplace.

In shelters, cats often get tired of fighting with other cats and decide to go their own way.

At work, there are plenty of potential reasons for cat fights.

Workers who are allergic to cats may be forced to cohabitate with them.

Older cats may feel threatened by the younger cats that are more active.

Those who work in close quarters may have issues with their cats attacking each other during the night.

Most cat fights are over territory.

The cats involved will fight to stake their claim on a certain spot to sleep.

A cat that has successfully secured a territory may not be motivated to move out.

Then, of course, there are the reasons that are not so obvious.

"Cats are territorial, so it can be an issue when cats are living together," said Dr. John Bradshaw, a veterinarian at the Animal Medical Center in New York.

"It can be pretty destructive when the cat is on both sides," he said, adding that the cat is "definitely not a placid animal."

If the cat is attacked by another cat, it will usually fight back, Bradshaw said.

In most cases, the cats involved will eventually get over the issue, but it may take some time.

"It's usually a matter of the cat that is the aggressor to recognize that the other cat is a victim of the aggression," he said.

Back to the two cat fights in Canada

In Canada, two cat fights were recorded in the past year, according to Canada's SPCA.

The first fight occurred in December, when a woman brought her cat to a veterinary clinic in Laval, Que.

The cat had been hit by a car and suffered a fractured pelvis.

On Christmas day, another woman brought her cat to a shelter in Montreal with a broken leg, according to the SPCA.

The SPCA said it doesn't know what caused the cat to fight, but the woman said she was attacked by the cat.

Even though the cat's injuries weren't serious, the woman was charged with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

Another answer to, “Why do cats purr?” Cat parents are familiar with the relaxing purrs of cats as they cuddle and stroke them. These little purr machines exude contentment, with the added benefit of uplifting the moods of the people who adore them while lowering their blood pressure. Many kitties quickly figure out another basic benefit of purring — soliciting food and attention from their favorite people. Since most cat-parents lavish attention on their cats when they purr, cats often purr when they want affection and treats. Read more

Turn it on to a low setting and use a timer to have it come on at dusk and go off the next morning. Be sure to place it in a dry, covered area like on a porch, covered patio, or... Read more

When the owner returned two minutes later, the researchers observed the feline’s response. About two-thirds of cats and kittens came to greet their owners when they returned, and then went back to exploring the room, periodically returning to their owners. These animals, the researchers concluded, were securely attached to their owners, meaning they viewed them as a safe base in an unfamiliar situation. Read more

Depending on what age your cat is, its coat may be more or less thick. Cats shouldn't go bald or lose their hair, but by determining just how full their coat is you can narrow down their age.[1]. The coat of an older cat may be more thin than that of a younger one. Read more
