What temperature is too hot for cats

Cats do not overheat very easily. The best way to know if your cat is overheated is to check the temperature around him. The fur on the cat’s back should be dry, the inside of his ears should have no moisture. If you pet him, you will feel the heat radiating through his coat. The cat may appear to be flushed, bright red in the face or panting. If the outside temperature is over 90 degrees F, your cat should be indoors. If your cat is panting, try fanning him with a paper bag. If the temperature is too high, he could have a heat stroke, which can be fatal.

How do I keep my cats safe in the heat?

It is best to keep your cats inside when the weather gets too hot. They need to be able to cool down. If they want to be outside, make sure they have access to plenty of water, shade, and fresh air. Make sure your cats have fresh, cool water. They need to be fed small amounts several times a day. They also need to be brushed and bathed. If possible, be sure to have a thermostat on your air conditioner, so that it is set to a higher temperature for your cat.

Make sure your cat has fresh water available at all times, either from a water bowl or a fountain. Cats tend to avoid water that is left standing for an extended period of time. If your cat will be climbing in and out of the house, be sure to secure the other side of the cat door so that she can escape if she feels the heat is too much. She should be able to adjust her temperature based on how she feels.

Is there anything I can do to keep my cat cool in the heat?

If they are in the house, make sure they have plenty of fresh water. If they are outdoors, make sure they have access to shade and plenty of fresh air. Cats are not as sensitive to the heat as dogs. If you notice your cat panting, fan him with a paper bag. Do not try to cool your cat with cold water. If you have air conditioning, make sure it has a temperature that is lower than the outside temperature.
