What are mites in cats

Heavy mites are the most common cause of elevated serum levels of the blood markers for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and FeLV. In the US, these two blood markers for FIV and FeLV are referred to as the Feline Leukemia and FIV (FeLV) tests.

The most common mites that cause elevated levels of these two blood markers are Demodex canis, D. cati, D. brevis, D. gatoi and D. sanguineus.

Mites live in the hairless skin of cats and cause the skin to become itchy and irritated.

Mites can also cause other problems and diseases besides FIV and FeLV.
