If your cat is chewing on something, it may be uncomfortable. “Cats’ teeth are very sharp and can cause damage to their gums,” says Dr. Tarlov. “Cats don’t chew their food much so their teeth don’t wear down in their lifetime. If they chew something, it may be because they want to get rid of the stuff stuck in their teeth. It’s uncomfortable, but they’re not chewing their gums.”

When should you see a vet?

“If your cat is chewing something or is having difficulty eating, see your veterinarian,” says Dr. Tarlov. “They can give you some tips on how to make sure your cat is eating.”

If your cat is chewing something and it’s causing swelling or pain, Dr. Tarlov recommends taking him to the veterinarian immediately.
