What species is a cat
“A cat is a mixed breed of some sort.”
“I think you’re wrong,” I said. “I think he is a cat. I think he’s just a cat.”
Cat people, who are the subject of this book, are a special breed of cat person. The cat people I know are the minority. They are the ones who are devoted, obsessed, and for whatever reason, have chosen to live their lives as if cats were real. They see every cat as a potential friend and family, every cat as a living being worthy of respect. They know that cats are actually cats and not, say, a kind of rat, a kind of rat that got sent to the wrong address; they know that cats are pets and not, say, food.
I have talked to many cat people, and the things they have to say are the things I have been feeling and observing for a long time. I am not making this up. I have just had the good fortune to meet some of these cat people and hear their stories. The stories are strange, funny, sad, and, most of all, true. Why? Because all cat people are, in their own way, weird. They are the people who are so dedicated to the cause that, for their own reasons, they have decided to live their lives as if cats are real.

This book is about people who love cats and the strange things they do to prove it.

I’ve just had the good fortune to meet some of these cat people and hear their stories. The stories are strange and funny, sad, and, most of all, true. Why? Cat people are people who love cats so much that they have decided to live their lives as if cats were real. Well, maybe not “real.” But certainly “real” in their own minds. They see every cat as a potential friend, a living being worthy of respect, and they recognize that cats are, in fact, cats.
Maybe they are crazy. Maybe they are just weird. Maybe they are just nuts. Maybe they are just insane. But I’m telling you straight: they are not crazy. Cat people are crazy. Cat people are weird.
When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. Henri Nouwen. Read more
For cats, a stable social environment is not enough; they rely on their owners to provide a stable physical environment as well. Cats are fundamentally territorial animals that put down powerful roots in their surroundings. For some, their owner’s home is all the territory they need. Read more
It takes both content and layout to make something a guide. The layout or structure of a guide must be that so, when someone is trying to find/reference information from the guide, they can do so logically or simply. If someone has to visually bop around your guide to find what they are looking for, the guide does not pass the layout test. Read more
