What age can cats eat wet food
Dogs: The website for Petsmart, a national pet store chain, says, "Newborn kittens and puppies should be fed a diet of high-quality, high-protein milk replacer until they are 6 to 8 weeks old."
Cats: According to the ASPCA, cats can start eating solid foods at 7 weeks. Again, their website says, "For kittens, start with kitten milk replacer, which is a milk-based formula that is available in a variety of flavors such as chicken, tuna and lamb."
So, what's the difference? The American Animal Hospital Association says that milk replacer is best for young puppies and kittens, while the ASPCA says liquid is better. Milk replacer is a combination of water, milk and other ingredients.
What you feed your cat depends on everyone's individual pet preferences.
"I would say that most people tend to feed their pets a diet that is low in fat and high in protein," says Dr. Smith. "I try to feed my cat puppy and kitten food as much as I can, because I know that it is high in protein. I know that there is a better chance of them being healthy and growing when they receive a high-protein diet."
My cat won't eat
Yes, they can be picky eaters, but that doesn't mean they don't want to eat.
"I think that's why we started to feed them a diet that we could control," says Dr. Smith. "So that they could eat anything that we put in front of them. But it's something that you have to work with."
Is my cat too old to eat wet food?
"Sometimes cats can be a little bit older and still do very well on wet food," says Dr. Smith. "But I would say that most cats can eat a wet food that's made for them as long as they're healthy and that there's nothing wrong with them or their digestive system."
Is it safe for my cat to eat wet food?
"Do try to have a diet that is very low in fat and high in protein," Dr. Smith says. "Although I do know that some cats can eat a wet food diet, there's some cats that can't."
Is it safe to feed my cat a dry food diet?
A lot of people feed their cats dry food, but Dr. Smith says, "A lot of people don't realize that it can be very dangerous to feed your cat a diet that's high in fat and low in protein. I know that it's a very popular diet, but I don't really like to feed it to my cat.
