What food is healthy for cats
There are many myths about cat foods. For example, some people think that cat foods should be made from only meat and meat by-products. Others believe that only raw foods are healthy for cats. There is no such thing as a healthy cat food.
The truth is that the best cat foods do contain meat and meat by-products, but that does not mean that the cat food is healthy. The best cat foods contain a balanced diet of fresh or frozen meat, meat by-products, an ingredient that provides vitamins and/or minerals and a food that provides a balanced amount of calories. Total calories should be between 9 and 10 percent of the total diet.
How much do you feed your cat per day?
The amount of food you should feed your cat depends on the size of your cat. Small cats, weighing less than 5 pounds, should be fed approximately 4.5 ounces per day. Adult cats, weighing more than 5 pounds, should be fed about 6 ounces per day. Never feed your cat more than the recommended amount of food.
How do you know if your cat is overweight?
If your cat is overweight, you may notice that she is having trouble getting around, she is slower to get up, more likely to catch colds, has trouble jumping and has more body fat than she should. Very obese cats can develop a condition called hepatic lipidosis. This condition causes the liver to become enlarged and may lead to liver failure. Cats with liver failure will often die.
How do you know if your cat is underweight?
If your cat is underweight, your cat may be losing weight. Your cat may also be more likely to develop a multitude of health problems such as infertility, cancer, pancreatitis, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, arthritis and diabetes. Cats that are underweight are much more susceptible to disease.
