What does a radiologist do?

A radiologist does diagnostic tests by examining pictures of the body that are taken by a digital x-ray machine. They also look at pictures of the body that are taken by a digital ultrasound machine.

How do they do the tests?

The radiologist will do a general exam. They will check the pulses and examine the abdomen. They may also perform an ultrasound to check the uterus, bladder or ovaries. They may do a CAT-scan or MGH to check the lungs, heart, bones and other internal organs.

Good quality CT scanning is the most important factor for the diagnosis of pulmonary emboli. On a poor quality scan it is impossible to rule out emboli.
